Fill Your Tank with Mystery Shopping

One of the most difficult things about mystery shopping is that it often doesn't pay enough to really warrant going out on the shops in the first place. Most people consider the time that they spend filling out the forms in the evening to be enough to compensate for the work that was done. The fact of the matter is, you're going to have to spend a considerable amount of time going from shop to shop in order to evaluate these stores for the businesses. There are some ways, however, that you can make sure that they are worthwhile. Here are some of my suggestions.

The first thing that you're going to need to do is to plan your route out in order to make the most of your time. This is especially the case since gas is so expensive now and driving around town for a day can certainly put a dent in your budget. If you make sure that your route only takes you in one direction and loops back to your house, you can do several mystery shopping jobs during the day and use the least amount of gas possible.

Speaking of gas, I often try to incorporate a couple gas shops into my daily duties. Although many of these gas stations do not pay you enough to fill your tank, they may give you $10-$15 worth of gas at a time which can certainly help you to be able to get around town for the day. Not only that, many of these gas stations will also give you compensation for a snack that you purchase inside which is usually something that you need anyway. I often purchase a drink at the gas stations and then worry about getting some food in a restaurant mystery shop.

Another way that you can make your mystery shopping worthwhile is to make sure that you get some grocery shopping in during the day. Mystery shopping at grocery stores is a lot of fun, and you get to evaluate several different areas of the store before you leave. Most of the higher-end grocery stores will give you enough money that you can typically purchase about $25 worth of groceries. This, of course, is between compensation for the groceries purchased and additional monies that they pay you for doing the job. The only thing that you really need to be careful of what you do this is that you don't purchase something perishable too early in the day and then have it rot in the car while you're doing your other mystery shops.

By doing some careful planning, both in the route that you will take in and the type of shops that you do during the day, you can certainly make a success out of mystery shopping. Many people do mystery shopping one day per week and then it gets them enough groceries that they can pack a lunch throughout the week and then it puts enough cash in their pocket that they can fill their tank.
